The older two kids recently brought home their midterm report cards. I’m not very fussed about report cards at this stage – they are so young, they are frankly smart enough (sometimes TOO smart), and we’ll worry about serious academia later on when it matters a lot more. However, it is always nice to see some progression in their learning and achievement from the beginning of the year, and I was glad to see two report cards demonstrating just that. Overall, they were quite positive.
Except. Except the part that had me in tears at the playground. Tears of laughter.
Social Studies
Grade: C+
(good grief, it’s so weird to have a kid old enough to be receiving LETTER grades! I digress.)
This term, we explored various aspects of community in our Social Studies unit. One such aspect involved identifying and understanding the purpose behind rules in our community, our schools and our homes. Oliver had some difficulty demonstrating understanding of what rules are and giving examples of relevant rules at home. When asked about what some of the rules are at home, Oliver answered with “Don’t jump off a cliff,” and “Don’t throw knives at aliens.”
(OMG.)
I mean, these are important regulations for anyone to operate under, right? I’m so glad I’m managing to pass on the basics of appropriate behaviour to this child. We really mustn’t throw knives at aliens. I’m just wondering what we should be doing about them. After all, Callum told me this morning that him and Oliver took Charlie (who apparently can walk and talk like them after dark, like some kind of baby changeling) on one of their secret missions last night which involved “going to the pub, fighting the aliens, fighting the bad guys, going to the coffee shop, drinking hot chocolate, going to our secret lab” and then coming home again before sunrise. So if they aren’t throwing knives at them, I wonder how exactly they are fighting them. I must ask.

I just hope that teacher laughed as hard as I did when she filled out that report card. We really mustn’t take school so seriously right now.

OMG – Laughing so hard right now. I have tears streaming down my face. We had something similar happen once and I had to write a note to the teacher explaining that we didn’t teach Son No. 1 to flip the bird as a means of dealing with frustration.

I think not throwing knives at aliens shows string diplomatic skills and should’ve bumped that social studies grade right up.

“Don’t jump off cliffs” is an important family rule, too. Especially if you don’t have your alien fighting gear sheathed.
